The journey was planned so that the students would be integral to the preparation and execution of the expedition from beginning to end, with guidance from our team.
The journey began along the Cornish coastline with our base being the “Spirit of Falmouth” a 92’ Schooner classic yacht provided by charity Turn to Starboard.
Using the floating base of “Spirit” the students took out kayaks to explore the coves, creeks and beaches of Cornwall’s stunning south coast.
The Exeter College students responded brilliantly to their challenge. They worked in small teams to learn the art of sailing a classic yacht which helped provide team cohesion, adventure training and leadership skills. The group also explored and navigated caves and coves by sea kayak.
Wild camping and bushcraft skills
They spent two nights wild camping under the stars, making driftwood fires to cook their freshly caught mackerel for dinner. They also had the opportunity to experience sea kayaking by night, using only the moon and stars for navigation.
Overall the expedition was a great success with lots of hands-on learning. Students were challenged to go beyond their comfort zones and learn new skills under the careful guidance of the Wildspace Team.
Exeter College Outdoor Adventure Programme Leader Nick Bridge says: “The programme that Rich and the Wildpsace team put together was tailored to meet the learning outcomes that we wished to achieve and was delivered in a really creative and fun atmosphere. Our students were really challenged throughout the programme. Thanks to Rich and the team for putting together this bespoke adventure package for us.”
Jack – Exeter College Outdoor Adventure Student says: “A huge thanks to the Wildspace team for an awesome adventure in Cornwall. It was great to learn so many new skills in such a stunning location.”
