Pilot gig build and The Epic Row

Wildspace were involved in supporting the
Great Big Cornish Gig Project

This project involved wounded, injured and sick (WIS) servicemen and women building a Cornish Pilot Gig before undertaking The Epic Row from Falmouth to the Scilly Isles.

The project offered new boat building skills to the participants as well as the challenge of an epic adventure journey to the Scillies.

Wildspace provided a programme of outdoor adventure activities to support the project, assisting with building team cohesion and developing water confidence among the participants.

We provided assistance with risk assessments and the safety plan, as well as co-ordinating the training programme for this fantastic challenge.

The build project and Epic Row were a great success with the gig “VALIANT” making its way along the Cornish coastline followed by an open crossing to the Scillies. VALIANT was then handed over to the charity “Help for Heroes” who competed in the World Pilot Gig Championships.

“Wildspace Adventures were an integral part of the training and preparation phase of the Veteran’s Gig project. Rich designed a programme of training and team development activities for our participants, that was key to the success of the Epic Row challenge. He was able to draw on his experience of working in the outdoors with wounded, injured and sick (WIS) servicemen and women to design a bespoke programme that was both challenging and supportive to our participants.

Rich also provided technical advice and assistance with the detailed planning needed for Epic Row challenge- writing a bespoke safety plan and risk assessments for what was a truly unique project.”  Mike Selwood: Veteran’s Gig Build and The Epic Row- Project Leader
